In this episode of the Mindful Turtle, Rachel focuses on expanding the boundaries of traditional art materials in nature-based settings. Introducing unexpected items - both natural and manufactured - into creative spaces, can enhance children's exploratory learning experiences.

This week’s invitation is to add two new, novel tools to your art area—indoors or outdoors.

Art is supposed to be about creative expression! Mixing things up, like providing materials the children wouldn’t expect to see in the art area, can lead to all sorts of curiosity and exploration.

Some examples of tools to add this week:

    • Natural: leaves (including pine needles), acorn caps, sticks, seeds like kernels of corn, rocks

    • Manufactured: house painting brush, giant cardboard boxes, fly swatters, marbles etc.

As you’re thinking about materials, keep in mind the many different kinds of art including painting, sculpting, theater, music, and more!
